What? is First Aid
First Aid is the immediate medical assistance given in an emergency before qualified medical
support is available. The first person at the scene of an incident is not likely to be a doctor,
paramedic or nurse but more likely to be a person just like you! It will be your confidence and
competence which will help handle an incident.
What? about our courses
We organise, teach and continuously train individuals or companies in first aid and lifesaving
techniques and offer HSE, IQL and RLSS recognised courses. We believe in making courses specific
and relevant to your needs and provide largely proactive sessions based on scenarios and response.
We aim to give individuals the confidence and knowledge to respond in an emergency situation at
the level which they choose, whether that is a four day course or a one off training session for
a group of people. We concentrate on providing continuous training at a basic level but with the
option to choose nationally recognised assessments in order to be qualified in lifesaving,
lifeguarding, first aid or defibrillation. All these courses are run under a policy of flexibility,
so we teach at a time to suit you in a venue of your choice.
What? do we teach
All our training is based on the latest UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines, St John’s Ambulance
and the British Red Cross as can be found in the DK First Aid Manual (2002), as well as the
Institute of Sport and Recreation Management and Royal Lifesaving Society publications.
Where possible the activities will be made active and “hands on”. To ensure that everyone on
the course learns effectively we aim to ensure that there is experiential learning, a low stress
environment, positive reinforcement and the cycle of seeing, hearing and doing.
What? is assessed
For certain nationally recognised courses there is a formal assessment at the end of the course.
There is no written examination and every person will be given an equal opportunity to show their
ability in a relaxed environment. For other courses, competence and confidence will be assessed
regularly throughout the course by their trainer.
The outcomes of a session are measured in recap sessions where session quizzes and simulated
scenarios are used. Each candidate will be given the chance to answer and demonstrate. Each
participant will be given the chance to ask questions, and try out the practical skills on their
own or in small groups. You may also be asked to fill in progress papers so that you and your
trainer can enable your learning to develop.
No candidate will be asked to demonstrate in front of the whole group if they express a preference
not to. However, dealing with an incident with onlookers is a skill which WHATIF?TRAINING
like to ensure candidates have a chance to experience.
What? about your work place
Whether it be a factory, school, leisure centre or building site we encourage all participants
to think critically about the legalities and health and safety provisions for the people in their
work place. The course offers time to think about risk assessments and prevention of incidents as
well as the first aid training.
WHATIF?TRAINING would like the opportunity to create specific and continuous courses to
give your staff the confidence and competence to react in any first aid situation.
